Learn how to gauge the size of real-world objects with the Measure app and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch camera. And learn how to measure objects and people more easily using the LiDAR Scanner on iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

  • How to take a single measurement Open the Measure app, then follow any onscreen instructions that ask you to move your device around. This gives your device a frame of reference for the object you're measuring and the surface it's on. Keep moving your device until a circle with a dot in the center appears.

  • Move your device so that the dot is over the starting point of your measurement, then tap the Add button .

  • Slowly move your device until the dot is over the ending point of your measurement, then tap the Add button again.

After you take a measurement, you can adjust its starting and ending points. Touch and hold one of the points, then drag it where you want it to go. The measurement changes as you move the point.

While the measurement is displayed, you can tap the number to see it in inches and centimeters. Tap Copy, and the value is sent to your clipboard so you can paste it into another app. Tap Clear to start over.

You can also take a photo that shows the object and its measurement. Just tap the Shutter button , and the photo appears in the lower-left corner of your screen. Tap it to make edits using Markup, or swipe left to save it to your Photos app.

If your device detects that the object you're measuring is a square or rectangle, it automatically places a measurement box around the object. Tap the Add button and measurements appear for the object's width and length. Move your device slightly, and the object's calculated area appears.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max use the LiDAR Scanner to help you measure objects more quickly and accurately with the Measure app.

When the Measure app detects a person in the viewfinder, it automatically measures their height from the ground to the top of their head, hat, or hair. You can tap the shutter button to take a photo of the person with their height measurement. Then you can use Markup on the photo, save it, and share it.

On iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, guide lines help you measure the height and straight edges of furniture, countertops, and other objects easily and precisely. Guide lines appear automatically along edges and when making a vertical measurement.

Snap your starting and ending points to the yellow guide line, then tap a measurement to see the expanded information that iPad Pro provides. You can view the measurement's elevation, distance away, angle, and more.

The Measure app on iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max adds a ruler overlay to line measurements, showing you the object's dimension in granular increments. Move your iPad Pro close to a line measurement to see the ruler view appear, then tap the shutter button to take a photo so you can use the increments for planning projects.

Tap the list button to view all the measurements that you've taken during the current session, including screenshots that you took. This helps you keep track of dimensions as you measure a space or series of objects. You can copy the dimensions into Notes, Mail, or any app you want to save your list in, or clear them to start over.

Technology has now made it very easy for anyone to measure an item without even having to leave their chair or purchase any extra tools. The measuring apps available for Android and IOS can help you to measure practically anything, from the length of a table to the distance between two corners of the room. To assist you in choosing the right measuring app for you and your operating system, Blinds Direct has done some trial and testing to bring you our recommendations of the best apps for both Android and IOS to aid you in measure for any situation.

AirMeasure is very easy to use as it includes helpful video tutorials for both overall uses of the app and for each of the individual tools. It is also very convenient to use because the button that selects your start- and end-point of measurement is located below the focus ring and within easy reach of a thumb. Furthermore, the virtual tape measure that unspools on the screen as the camera pans is a nice touch too.

Measured is a simple app that only does very basic measuring, and provides a fairly sparse set of tips for using the app. Interestingly, one of the tips was to perform vertical measurements from the bottom to the top. A nice feature: haptic feedback as you move the camera and draw out the measuring line.

Overall this is an excellent app for Android users to measure objects and distance. It does come with some limitations, but the camera feature of this app makes it best among all the other measure apps available.

Unlike other measure apps, this app is not just a regular app to tell you the height and width of an object, but it has some very advanced features which are hard to find in other applications. You can measure distance, angle, volume, path, perimeter and area with this application. The developer also included a simple on-screen ruler option too.

ImageMeter provides tools that help you measure lengths, angles and areas in your photos. Instead of drawing sketches by hand, simply take a photo and annotate it with the dimensions on your phone or tablet.

What is also special about ImageMeter is that it enables you to measure within the image once you calibrate it with a reference object of known size. It often happens that after taking the photo, being back at home or in the office, one realizes that some important distances have not been measured. This is no problem anymore with ImageMeter because it enables you to measure the missing data directly from the photos, afterwards. Additionally, with this feature, you can also easily measure the dimensions for places which are too difficult to reach. The only thing you will need to do this is some kind of reference object to calibrate to absolute size. ImageMeter will take care of all perspective foreshortening and will still compute the measurements correctly.

Measurements done by these apps are not always accurate. For that matter, an accuracy range at the bottom of the screen shows the margin of error for measurements. App performance differs from phone to phone depending on how well the device implements the ARCore.

There are measuring apps for Android to help you. Even the best measuring apps may not be quite as accurate as your good old measuring tape but, they will give you a decent estimate of distance or the length of what you need measure.

Before we do anything else, we would like to remind you that the following list of the 5 best measuring apps for Android are not 100% accurate. So, we DO NOT recommend these measurement apps to be used for professional purposes.

The GPS Fields Area Measure is one of the best measuring apps for Android on our list. It uses existing technology in an effective way. As the name suggests, the app basically measures a distance or an area by using GPS data. All you need to do is run this app, select your starting and ending points, and click start measure.

So, if you are a farmer, developer, architect, or someone who simply wants to tape measure a field, then this is the right app for the job. With global positioning services becoming more and more accurate, there will be a time when this app will accurately measure everything.

While it would be pretty cool to get accurate measurements just from a photo, it would be nearly impossible for a normal camera to capture any kind of usable data. This is exactly why you need some kind of reference point in order to derive the measurements.
