Driver Fx 5500
I have a pretty old system (HP t617m with pentium 4 2.6 ghz) that Im trying to revive using Xubuntu 18.04 32-bit. In order to do so, I bought recently a Nvidia FX 5500 PCI (I have no AGP ports), which I never be able to make it work. I know that are a free driver called nouveau, and I want to use it. In order to use a PCI video card, I set in BIOS the change between onboard and pci graphics. When I make the change, the card gives the HP boot screen normal, but after that it just becomes a black screen. Then Im force to set again the onboard graphics, and everything is normal.
driver fx 5500
NVIDIA is 'replacing' well ... renewing some of their products as we speak, among the new products is the GeForce FX 5500 well new ... When I first asked NVIDIA about the 5500 they seemed utterly surprised and asked me why I was reviewing a 5500. A tad weird. Hey it's a big market and NVIDIA sells more low- and mid-end products then high-end these days. So why not ? People want to know. So today dear friends we will be testing the all new and completely low-end product the GeForce FX 5500. Performance wise expect an overclocked GeForce 5200 yet a tad faster.
Simplicity is what the product is about, it's dirt cheap, you'll be able to play a few games plus you'll have all the features that NVIDIA has to offer you. Dual monitor, outstanding media playback and a plethora of other features. This product is made for the person that really doesn't care that much for gaming yet wants the best features available that are not gaming related, and all that for bottom dollar ... that's the 5500 my friends, let's have a look on what Point Of View offers here.
I already installed the 304 legacy driver and it works. But on Nvidia web site I saw that 334 was suitable for my card, so I tried to install it.However, thank you for your reply, I think Nvidia should take care better of the drivers description.
And what makes things even more complicated, drivers page does not offer you correct driver for any of those graphics cards. So basically you have to use advanced driver search and use the newest drive ignoring driver version, or go to devtalk forums drivers page and check that appendix A from newest driver readme.

CAUTION! Application crashes or blue screens with NVIDIA Quadro FX 4000 SDI, FX 4500 SDI, or FX 5500 SDI in conjunction with a later NVIDIA driver than 162.62 due to a driver bug. Install NVIDIA driver 162.62 for these cards, or use the current driver and set use_old_nvsdk to 1 in the configuration file.
So the oldest compatible driver for this card is the 56.64 version? My p3 1GHZ coppermine with 45.23 dont detected the card/Only with my gf2mx/mx400]With my GF2 mx 45.23 UT is the 40-60 on maps but Fx5500 with 56.64 driver, the maxmium is 50 fpsThe rig:Asus TUV4x256mb ramChipset 4in1VIA ver. 4.35FX5500 tested Zogis and Zotac, both 256mb
That is not adding ID string to the ini file. Just find the ID string in a newer driver that has the card there and copy/paste it to ini file of 45.23 driver. That way you can make it show up as correct card name in windows device manager. That is what I did with FX 5950 ultra.
The 5900XT has the same string path as the NV35. If I replace it the driver installs but I cannot run anything in d3d. OpenGl works fine though.Oh, and the ini file is the setup.ini. Do you mean the Nvami.inf file?
They changed the name of the inf file at some point in drivers. Basically you need to put 2 lines from NVaml.inf file of a newer driver version that has FX 5500 support to NVagp.inf file of 45.23 driver and put them in correct sections of the inf file. There is one line that says FX 5500 in newer driver inf file and that same line has the device ID for the card too and then you need to find another line that mentions the same device ID and copy that line as well.
I just checked mine and my NVagp.inf in 45.23 file doesn't have DEV_332. It has DEV_331 as 5900 ultra and I have added 5950 ultra as DEV_333 and there is a quadro card as DEV_338 as last one on the list. Looking at later driver versions inf files 5900XT should use same NV30 driver as my 5950 ultra and not NV35. Not sure why mine doesn't have that DEV_332 id that yours does.
Thanks for looking that up! Apparently the guru3d version is different from the official... Anyway I downloaded the correct 45.23 driver and did exactly what you described but the same problems still remain. direct3d doesn't work and when it does (in unreal for e.g) the performance is unacceptable. I believe the 5900xt is simply not compatible with this soft mod.
Has anyone got the 45.23 driver to work with the FX 5950 Ultra ?? I have tired to edit the NVAGP by adding the live under [MFG] %NVIDIA&DEV_0331.DeviceDesc% = NV30, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0331 and adding the line under [Strings] NVIDIA&DEV_0333.DeviceDesc="NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra" but I still get a message from installer "Setup was unable to locate any NVIDIA graphics chips on this system. The installation will be terminated." Windows 98 SE
I installed openSuse 11.3 (new installation), and all work fine. But, the problems started when I wanted to install nvidia drivers.I used two methods for that installation: A) By adding repository by hand:YaST -> Software -> Software Repositories -> Add
Are the one click drivers available for the FX5500 and openSUSE ? I would be surprised if they are, since to the best of my knowledge there are no released proprietary drivers for the FX5xxx series of cards.
I opened a thread 5 hours earlier with the the same exact issues but I have an f5200 card. I also tried most of the same things to get it to work without resolve. There are definitely new drivers available in the openSuse repository which were added in the last couple of days. They seem to work as if they are copies of the 11.2 drivers. Anyway, your not alone.
GeForce MX 4000 PCI had no problems booting with my Asus TX97 from what I recall; didn't get it into Windows and install drivers (no errors, just didn't feel like it) - booted FreeDOS and UBCD applications mostly (I remember Superscape being OK). From using the card in previous systems (faster CPUs ofc) 3D performance is alright for older games - don't expect to run Halo or anything, but it shouldn't have an issue with something like Quake III. With a Pentium Pro you'll probably be more limited by the CPU anyways.
WRT FX 5500 specifically - if memory serves the DVI outputs on cards from that era tended to be less-than-perfect unless you were dealing with a pro-grade card (like Quadro or FireGL). I don't know if that would or wouldn't be the case for that card, just something I thought about. I'd also add that you might want to look at FX 5200s - PCI versions with DVI look to average around $15, and you will get essentially the same performance (FX 5200 and 5500 are basically the same card). 041b061a72
